Why We’re Doing This— The Liquid Light Sound Bath & Connecting to Your Heart

There’s two main reasons to value meditation.

One is that it clears your mind and releases stress.

It’s relaxing.

I meditate every morning for this reason. Having a clear mind makes you more productive. Our society values productivity: meditation can help.

As I continue, I don’t mean to downplay this benefit. Most of our diseases are caused from stress. Learning how to relax and clear your mind is paramount.

But there is a second benefit to meditation. One that is challenging to articulate, that is extremely personal, that is what some call “spiritual” but doesn’t have to be.

When we quiet our minds, the voice in our heart begins to speak.

And these are the paramount moments in meditation. When we begin to float downstream and we listen to our deepest self. The part of you that believes in you, that knows how to let go, that can guide you through challenge and onto growth.

We all have this voice inside of ourselves. But to hear it, we have to clear the voices of fear and anxiety. We have to learn to clear our minds.

This is easier said than done. I practiced yoga for over 5 years before I began to scratch the surface of meditation. I’ve always been impatient. My own journey with the gongs and singing bowls has informed my meditation practice, not the other way around.

Meditation is simple: you can sit down and do it anywhere.

So why do we organize these elaborate meditative events? Why do Bring huge gongs, crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, chimes, rain sticks, Aborigibal and Native American instruments and our latest addition — art projection? Why do we converge in cathedrals?

Why do we focus all our energy on coming together as a community and building the perfect environment for meditation?

I believe that to really value meditation, we have to have some of these deeper experiences. And in doing so, we may need an assist.

Not everyone has the time or ability to go on a 10 day vipassana retreat.

And these moments with our heart, they shouldn’t be a retreat. They should be relegated to weekend camping trips, retreats in Bali, travels to Bhakti Fest or Burningman.

We deserve deep, connected experiences with our own hearts. On a regular basis, in our urban environments, the night before we have to get up for work the next day.

Sound meditation is, in my opinion, the most powerful tool for going deeper in your meditation practice.

This month, we are taking it a step further and adding a visual component.

We are projecting a multicolored, mind-expanding display of liquid light on the cathedral like ceilings of Hack Temple (who sponsored us to help us make it happen).

Hack Temple, 908 Broadway

Liquid light has a history: it’s form of light art that surfaced in the early 1960’s. It’s essentially colored oils that flow through spinning lenses, with different operators and then through a projector. We’re delighted to work with The Blindspot Project to make it happen. Here’s what wiki has to say about light shows:

“The style and content of each show was unique but the object of most was to create a tapestry of multimedia life event visual amplification elements that were seamlessly interwoven, in a constant state of flux and above all, reflected the music the show was attempting to depict in emotional visual terms.”

That means that the music & the visuals will be linked for a seamless experience.

It will bring you deeper.

This was by far, not the easiest event we’ve ever produced. We found out that the ceilings at Hack Temple (who sponsored our event to help make it happen) were too high— and we had to call in serious reinforcements.

Stefan G (also known as Psychedelicious in some circles) was called into to get a live feed of the liquid light projections and map them onto a 110ft ceiling. He’s really good at this sort of thing.

And he’s assured us that the visuals are going to be magnificent. We want to do everything we can to help you touch the center of your heart.
